The Feast of the Epiphany!

JANUARY 5-6, 2021! ……If this is where you just tuned in, work backwards or forwards so that you don’t miss the good news along the road! Yes, we actually took this beyond the Advent Season!

FINALLY! The wise men, the magi, notice something happening in the skies. The unusual happens. They follow up on this. They set out on a journey that takes about 2 years to get them to Jerusalem. You’d wonder that if they were so smart, why didn’t they know where to go directly. The real answer: I don’t know.

My answer: politics! Herod the Great, area governor/supervisor for Rome in those days, was a power to be reckoned with. He had spies. He had an ego as big as all get-out! Not to mention he was a little luney and self-centered to the max. The wise thing to do in those days and circumstances was to go present yourself and your mission diplomatically, and pump that man for as much information as possible so that you would know which way to go and not go.

That being said, I found an interesting treatment connecting some of the dots about the role of the wise men, and the role of Herod and possibly why he was as he was, why his sons turned out to be what they were and did, and what was happening as a sign of the times. Interesting information, except where the fellow presenting starts to editorialize about one of our former US Presidents. Other than that, interesting presentation.

Now, become wiser than what you were 5 minutes ago in biblical archaeological history… this is juicy!

Afshin Yaghtin is a pastor at the New Covenant Baptist Church in Spokane, Washington. Can’t find much else about him. Not sure what his pastoral credentials are. But he makes some interesting Blblical observations!

That also being said, this is the Feast of the 3 Kings, the day o the 3 Kings. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrations that they arrived and brought their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In today’s kidspeak, gold, Frankenstein, and mud. Gold so he won’t be broke financially. Frankenstein so that he won’t have to be his own monster, but have a monster for a friend in need. Mud…that’s what people need when they want to purify their skin… a mud bath! And playing in the mud is therapeutic, although your mom won’t be happy about it.

January 5th leads to January 6th, and it might take 2 days to get thru this stuff before your brain needs a break. Epiphany 2021 – Calendar Date -per the Western Calendar, ours.

Ok, gold for honoring the kingship. Frankensense for the prayers that go up into the heavens with our messages to God. Myrrh for the bitterness we suffer and must taste when we taste death, as it is also used for embalming bodies. All gifts fit for a king to remind him of his life’s journey that he is born to trod. There are many more interpretations. The wise men, the magi really thought this out. There were three gifts, so we assume there were three wise men. Many depictions are of these fellows traveling only with themselves. In those days, such learned people traveled with a caravan of goods, people, supplies, relatives, and servants. Or maybe they did just travel with each other.

We shall know once the journal of the magi is deciphered, translated, etc. Yes, a “lost” book called: Revelation of the Magi by Brent Landau. Here is an interesting link to articles regarding such: http://mysteriouswritings.com/the-mystery-of-the-three-wise-men-and-the-star-of-bethlehem/ Hard for us to believe, but those wise men did keep some sort of journal. Why wouldn’t they! They were learned and wise!

Alrighty now. Here is the piece de ‘resistance! Another biblio-archaeological treatment, Michael Rood. This fellow is a pastor AND researcher. He digs deeply, indeed. Look him up after the vidclip. Get your notepaper and pen ready. He uses the approach from the Chaldean civilization as the wise men’s roots. However, look it up here. Chaldea is a sub unit of Persian history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaldea. Meanwhile:

Let’s move on to the part you waited so long for, a gift of music….

And the beat goes on…. but here we end our blog for the season…. until next time! Dec.1-Jan.6! Happy New Year to all, and to all a good blessing! (Gotcha!)

Day -11th Day of Christmas

January 4, 2021

January 4, 2021

Liminal Space                 by Sue Tesar , Guest Author          ©12/2020

I drove out to Popham Beach early one March morning to see the sunrise.  It took me longer than expected, as I had not been there for years-it seemed so much closer in my mind.

When I arrived, the sun was well up, making any photography impossible; it was a bright and brilliant sun-everything reflected that.

I took the invitation time presented to walk, without any expectation.

The water was glistening; only a few fishermen were on the beach. It was quiet, in a wave-crashing way. I was not thinking about anything when I looked down and recorded this image.

This week, in meditation, I see that this image represents a time when we all were right on edge of the virus. The impact was still an unknown; the possibility of resisting the infection seemed plausible, we were curious and maybe a little cautious.

Today, it has become for me,  a symbol of liminality,  a threshold in time. Standing in the sand,  everything is moving, yet I am standing still and a little dizzy.  The pull of the current as the sand resettles informs me that once through this, life will still be different.

I am neither here nor am I there; the water has the power to remain constant—it comes in…it returns out to the sea, and then comes in again.  It reminds me of baptism—I am taken from one state into another through water.

With God, it is a trusted space of transformation; an opportunity to let go of practices and habits that no longer serve and to make holy a new covenant.  I am called to be present, to pray, to serve, to acknowledge spiritual gifts and to stand witness to this God that has filled me with life to share with others…

Prayer:

This Advent, may we walk bravely

into this time of transition,

 together,

bound by the waters of  our baptism.

May we remain stable,

as the world shifts around us,

that we reflect the glory of new birth

and light the way for others.

This year, into 2021, we are all on quarentine, but we are doing church differently. Let’s continue to celebrate in our hearts the Light of the world: Jesus Christ. I love this work sung by Whitney Houston way back in the day…. it has the rhythm of a camel ride! The motion of transitions…..-zmaleki

Feast of the Epihphany Day!

January 6, 2021

It’s the day of the magi, the 3 Kings! Remember, they had a bright idea that something unusual was happening because of the shift in the constellations! Jupiter was not doing it’s ordinary travels in the skies. No, Jupiter went backwards, forwards, doing things we have no explantion for today. It wasn’t just a planet alignment under natural circumstances. This was unusual happenings….

This just in from 2017….

And hot news from 2010… making national news on the ABC network!

There is a tradition that the wise men, the magi of Persia were the ones who saw the strange events of the season and they tracked it. Coming up is a seminar/sermon that tends to put it all together, historically and almost archaeologically.

You might need a pencil and paper to track some of the names and draw lines to connect one concept to the other. This is deep. If you have access to the Old Testament maps and New Testament maps this is where they are very useful!

Names and terms you will need to be aware of as they are referenced in the next sermon/seminar below:

Moses and his training;

Esau; Edomites as descendants of Esau; Herod was of the line of the Edomites

dispersions of the Jews;

Euphrates Valley area;

Daniel, book of Daniel Ch.4-6;

Daniel in the Lion’s Den story ;

Babylon/Babylonian Empire;

Nebuchadnezzar;

He is also the chancellor emeritus of The Master’s University in Santa Clarita, California, and The Master’s Seminary in Los Angeles California. [Wikipedia.com]

Take a break….. come back after you have had a snack and are refreshed. This is very lucrative (juicy!) information! Loaded!

The 12th Day of Christmas

January 5, 2021 Eve of the Epiphany, Eve of 3 Kings’ Day!

Today is the 12th day of Christmas! You know what that means….. we get to sing ALL of the 12 Days of Christmas song! By the way, on the 12th day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me? Ahah! [Look at your cheat chart, again!] ….hold on, there. We’ll get to those magi momentarily!

The 12th day has many traditions associated with it. Here are a few of the listings from wikipedia (Twelve Days of Christmas – Wikipedia): In the USA,

-Christians who celebrate the Twelve Days may give gifts on each of them, with each of the Twelve Days representing a wish for a corresponding month of the new year. They may feast on traditional foods and otherwise celebrate the entire time through the morning of the Solemnity of Epiphany. [Epiphany is tomorrow!]

-Contemporary traditions include lighting a candle for each day, singing the verse of the corresponding day from the famous The Twelve Days of Christmas, and lighting a yule log on Christmas Eve and letting it burn some more on each of the twelve nights.

-For some, the Twelfth Night remains the night of the most festive parties and exchanges of gifts. Some households exchange gifts on the first (25 December) and last (5 January) days of the Twelve Days.

-As in former times, the Twelfth Night to the morning of Epiphany is the traditional time during which Christmas trees and decorations are removed.

Soooo what did my true love give to me on this 12th day of Christmas?

-the 12 Points of the Apostles’ Creed, of course! “12 Days of Christmas” Real Meaning & History of Lyrics (crosswalk.com)

“I believe in

1.-God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in

2.-Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

3.-He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and

4.-born of the Virgin Mary.

5.-He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

6.-was crucified, died,

7.-and was buried.

8.-He descended into hell.

9.-On the third day he rose again.

10.-He ascended into heaven

11.-and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

12.-He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Finale: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic/universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.”

Now, about those magi, the wise men, the 3 Kings! Today is the Eve of the Epiphany! Did you know that they arrived at the household of Jesus and His family about 1-2 years after the Nativity! Unlike many of the manger scenes, these fellows were not there at the birth, nor at the arrival of the shepherds. In scripture, Herod referred to Jesus as “the young child”, not as to the baby. Matthew 2:8 [Matthew 2:8 – Bible Gateway]

Here is an interesting sermon presentation to wake up your brain. Verrrry interrresting! You might want to listen to the presentation rather than read it, or maybe read along. But treat it like a podcast! We Have Come to Worship Him | Desiring God .

It’s an interesting podcast sermon to listen to while you take down the Christmas tree or just put up your feet from multitasking…. Click on that last link. The vocal podcasting controls are at the top of the page after you arrive there at that link.

One more day to go…..even though this is the 12th Day of Christmas.

The 11th Day of Christmas!

January 4, 2021

On the 11th day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me? That’s a good question! Going back to the old coded message, the song of the 12 Days of Christmas was a secret way of teaching about the Bible in the Old and the New Testaments. The 11th day brought…..Ok, visit the cheat chart again! The 12 Days of Christmas – Lyrics Meaning and History of Tradition (christianity.com) .

YES, 11 pipers piping! What does that mean? Hint: After Judas Iscariot committed suicide, there were no longer 12 disciples aka apostles, but just how many still proclaiming the Gospel, trying to remain faithful to Jesus who was crucified and resurrected? Can you name them? Ahah! Another cheat chart needed:

The Bible’s Dozen | The Cornerstone (wordpress.com) This is a very interesting resource page! [from The Bible’s Dozen/The Cornerstone referenced in the link]

What’s all this have to do with baby Jesus? It’s all in the 20/20 hindsight… oh my, and we just completed the year of turmoil 2020. I wonder if there is a parallel universe we just intercepted!

Now let’s talk about those wisemen, the magi, the Epiphany guys….on tomorrow.

Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy this work by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Betcha hadn’t heard of him before associated with music composition, unless you knew about him already from his reputation as the African Mahler, and his association with Paul Lawrence Dunbar, WEDubois, and other American Renaisance writers. A very talented individual.

And be sure to make something to give away, and give it away!

I found it! I came upon a very unique presentation of the Nativity story. It is spoken in a type of Aramaic with a Hebrew lilt dialect that might have more than likely been spoken in those times. I am guessing about the language, but there are words that I do recognize from the Hebrew lilt. Either way, it has left me speechless for any further story telling. [This new Nativity film might be the best one yet – SpokaneFāVS (spokanefavs.com)] Interesting observations in the article. See the video in the article or click on the video below.

Until next time:

The 9th Day of Christmas

January 2, 2021

On the 9th Day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me? Gotcha again!

Hint: Here is the cheat chart…. The Twelve Days of Christmas –Christian legend and lore behind the carol–religious meaning – Beliefnet

Meanwhile,

Happy New Year some more! We have by now made some resolutions for making the New Year a better one for ourselves. We also have the memories we bring with us, the ones we cannot let go of.

I have a Christmastide memory that gets triggered when a certain Christmas carol is sung. In church this past Christmas Sunday, we sang lots of Christmas carols. The words came up in this one carol, the words written by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), under the original poem title: A Christmas Carol. The words were later put to music by Gustav Holst, the composer of the “The Planets” symphony. At the time I learned the poem, we were not a wealthy family by any means.

My mother held a government job working with the computerized machines of the day, and my dad had a fledgling business remodeling houses and office buildings. We were a struggling working poor, but proud family. However, I would not trade that experience for anything. I was very blessed to have been brought up in such a reality where pure love and faith kept us functioning and together.

The words that trigger the tears of wonderful memories:

I remember my mother looking at me with loving pride in her eyes. It was also a look that triggered something possibly in how she learned the poem when she was a child. And now her child was reciting the poem, watching the love pour out of her heart through her eyes. She passed away at the age of 94 on the way to 95 years old in 2008. But for some reason, her love graced me again at this Christmastide through this Christmas carol one Sunday morning, and triggered this memory that I just had to share.

“A Christmas Carol” [https://bookhaven.stanford.edu/2015/12/best-christmas-carol-ever-christina-rosettis-in-the-bleak-midwinter/]

In the bleak mid-winter
[Listen especially for this part:]

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,—
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

In case you are not that familiar with the carol’s tune: [-each rendition is slightly different, but that’s what artists do…deliver according to how they are so moved in performance.]

I just threw this one in. It brings forth great memories, too! It is also a lesson on life: When God Almighty answers your prayers and tells you to take certain actions, just do it. Great is the reward to be realized in more ways than one. That’s what the shepherds did when they got the message from the angels. That’s also what the magi did…. And in the days of plantation slavery, that’s what folks did to escape safely from the plantation slave life into freedom…. Amazing what we learn !

The 8th Day of Christmas

January 1, 2021

Happy New Year! We are now in the year 2021 A.D. It used to be designated as Annui Domini, or in the year of Our Lord. Somewhere along the line of time that got changed to C.E. for the Current Era, since many people don’t consider as Jesus Christ as their Lord…yet. But that’s OK. How time is labeled is all relative to the culture and how that culture embraces it. Anyway, Happy New Year!

This being the 8th day of Christmas, what do the skies look like this time of year?

Maybe it looks like this: Northern Lights May Be Visible Over Long Island This Week | Long Beach, NY Patch

The 7th Day of Christmas

December 31, 2020 (-one of these online editions starts with the word “Private”. I have let you into “my world”..which is an open book!)

We made it this far, you and I. What an adventure in Advent through Nativity. You do know that this is the 7th Day of Christmas, so we need another carol because those Wise Men, the magi, are on the way.

The magi are almost here, traveling on their ships of the desert. In the Celtic folk carol, I Saw Three Ships, we are reminded of this. The rest of the work is a wandering and remembering of the major players in the Christmas story. But very enjoyable and upbeat!

Today is also into the New Year! Happy New Year some more!

Now, about those 3 kings, the magi….. become one, yourself. Get off the internet and go commit a Random Act of Kindness. Start at home, then work on a stranger. You know what those angels said, “Peace on earth, good will towards those in whom God finds favor.” Yeah, yeah, your Bible probably says good will towards men. So what are the women, chopped liver/rib? That’s a mistranslation. Go back to the Greek/Aramaic.

Think it through. When you are doing a good deed in God’s name, living the Faith, you are feeling good about it all, not just for yourself. You have been an uplifting character, and so shall you be uplifted…. one in whom God finds your unabashed love for Him, working in His name, and who appreciates that He bestows His ….blessings thereupon! thusly He lifts you up, and as such you also find the strength to be encouraging and uplifting to others. And when you think you have run out of strength, you call on Him for help…as David wrote: My help comes from the Lord who has made the heavens and the earth… That’s in the Old Testament Psalms 24:7! Connect the dots, people! https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2024&version=NIV

New school worship here I come! “This is Christmas, let the world sing! Let us all Hallelujah, this is Christmas! ….come see the baby! ” a Luther Vandross work…..

Yes, the wisemen are coming! ….. Stay tuned…..hang in there! Meanwhile, on the 12th Day of Christmas what did that true love …give…to… meeeee? They are the 12 points of the Apostle’s Creed…leaping all over the place! Say what?……..Gotcha! hahahhahah!

Be sure to read the blog entry for January 1, tomorrow!

Actually, YOU get to write it, then give your writing away as a gift!

The 6th Day of Christmas

December 30, 2020

It’s me, the cat. I am taking over this page today. I heard about the Christmas Eve puppet show that went with the Christmas story at church. I heard all about it. Next year I hope they will sing one of my favorite songs. It is about the animals in the Nativity scene and what each of us animals gave to help the situation. My favorite verse is about a….cat! That’s me! Wait, I don’t see that verse in there yet. I have to work on that…

Lyrics

Jesus our brother kind and good
Was humbly born in a stable of wood
And the friendly beasts around him stood
Jesus our brother kind and good

“I” said the donkey shaggy and brown
I carried his mother up hill and down
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town
“I” said the donkey shaggy and brown.

“I” said the cow all white and red
I gave him my manger for a bed
I gave him my hay for to pillow his head
“I” said the cow all white and red.

“I” said the sheep with a curly horn
I have him my wool for his blanket warm
And he wore my coat on that Christmas morn
“I” said the sheep with a curly horn.

“I” said the dove from the rafters high
I cooed him to sleep that he should not cry
We cooed him to sleep my love and I
“I” said the dove from the rafters high.

“I” said the camel all yellow and black
Over the desert upon my back
I brought him a gift in the wise men’s pack
“I” said the camel all yellow and black.

Thus every beast remembering it well
In the stable dark was so proud to tell
Of the gifts that they gave Emmanuel
The gifts that they gave Emmanuel

Got it! …… I found a vidclip that tells about the cat! Then after that I wrote my own verses! teeheee meow! murrrrffff! Watch for the cat! The cat!

[This is by Sellacat Sellaband. I wonder if the cat was put in on purpose! Watch for the cat! ]

…I, said the cat, all fuzzy and bright ….kept everyone safe while on watch at night…

I work in God’s service a Woof Kitty to be…..for Jesus, my Lord, to in safety sleep!
